The Congregation of the Missionaries of St. Francis De Sales was founded in 1838 in France as the embodiment of the dream and vision of the Servent of God Fr Peter Mary Mermier. The first MSFS from France arrived in Pondicherry in 1845. Their Indian successors continued their work and established over a hundred schools to benefit all strata of society. The Missionaries of St. Francis De Sales commit themselves to the apostolate of education as one of their charisms and as an expression of their concern for total human development, inspired by Gospel values. SFS Public School & Junior College at Ettumanoor established in 2003 aims to brighten the future of every person with whom we come in contact, with a 'Salesian spirit of attentiveness to the individual, characterized by firmness and gentleness,' making him or her useful to society and helping all to become aware of their own dignity and destiny.
Our vision
A holistic society of compassionately human, spiritually enlightened, intellectually awakened, professionally skilled, socially committed and culturally integrated persons based on the values as lived and taught by Jesus Christ and followed by St. Francis De Sales.
Who we are?
The Missionaries of St. Francis de Sales (MSFS), also known as the Fransalians, was founded in Annecy, France on 24 October 1838 by Fr. Peter Mermier under the patronage of St. Francis de Sales. The political disturbances in the country, especially the French Revolution had its impact in the spiritual realm too as it left the people in a deep spiritual crisis and indifference towards their religious duties. Sensing the signs of the time Fr. Mermier took upon himself the task of a spiritual renewal in his people by preaching parish missions. This special apostolate in turn gave rise to a community of preachers gathered around Fr. Mermier.
Relevance of educational apostolate
One of the most powerful ways of evangelizing India is though the apostolate of education that this evangelization takes place by imparting life. For large number of Indian population, the only contact with Christ and Christians is through schools and colleges run by Christians, as majority of these students in catholic schools are not Christians. “The essential part of the Good News is that life is a gift that ought to be celebrated. When the celebration of the life is disrupted by lack of quality education or ignorance, the predominant way of enabling life to be celebration is through the Apostolate of education.” Evangeli Nuntiaandi in explaining the various aspects of evangelization underlines the educational goals that “it promotes renewal of humanity in terms of promotion of culture, human development and liberation, that every strata of the society is transformed in their judgment, determination of values or lines of though, points of interest and source of inspiration, ‘those involved in the apostolate become the visible embodiment of the unconditional love of God that was revealed in the person of Jesus Christ to everyone. This would mean revealing God’s love by imparting literacy and education.’ These are the teachings of the church on the mission and the relevance of the Apostolate.

Fr. Peter Mary Mermier

Fr. Mermier founded the congregation of the Missionaries of St. Francis de Sales (MSFS) for parish mission, foreign mission and the education of the youth.

His missionary zeal impelled him to request the Holy See for a mission abroad and to accept a vast mission territory in India when the Congregation was but in its infancy with just eleven professed members.
